Development Programs

Ages 6-10

First Shift

For players that have never played organized hockey, LMHA, in partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL), National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA), and Bauer Hockey, is offering the First Shift Program. The First Shift Program is an introductory hockey program that provides the participants with a complete set of Bauer Hockey equipment and a series of ice times to learn and develop the fundamental skills of hockey and assist in their transition to playing organized hockey the following year.

Ages 6-9

U7 & U9 Development

Development for LMHA-registered athletes begins in Under-7 (born 2019 + 2018) and Under-9 (born 2017 + 2016) with regularly scheduled Development Sessions with LMHA-appointed Development Coaches. These sessions focus on the individual development of each athlete and are designed to teach the skills as outlined in Hockey Canada's Core Skills for the respective age group.

‘C’ House Hockey Development

For athletes in U11, U13, and U15 'C' House Hockey, Development Sessions will be scheduled with LMHA-appointed Development Coaches in order to work with each participant in the development of their technical skills, as outlined in the Hockey Canada Core Skills for their respective age-group.

UNDER-11

Development for players ages 10 and 11. This program focuses on learning to play, diving into the fundamentals of hockey. Players will develop skills from forward scissor skating, pivots, attack triangles, and moving passes to different shots, basic 1 on 1 defence, puck retrieval, and basic positioning.

  • An alumnus of Langley Minor Hockey Association, Billy Thompson is the Program Lead at Canlan Twin Rink in Langley as well as the Assistant Coach of the Surrey Knights of the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL). Prior to beginning his coaching career, Billy played in the BCEHL (Zone) for the Greater Vancouver Canadians and the North Island Silvertips, before playing three seasons of junior hockey with the Surrey Knights.

UNDER-13

Development for players ages 12 and 13. This program focuses on learning to train, exploring what it takes to grow as an athlete. Players will develop skills from 1 leg weaving, evasive skating, moving puck control, and more advanced passing to net drives, moves in combination, gap control, escape moves, and forechecks.

  • Paul played College Hockey for Cornell University before moving back to Canada to pursue a career in coaching and player development. Paul has coached LMHA A1 teams at the Under-13, Under-15, and Under-18 age groups, as well as served as the Head Coach for the Surrey Knights of the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and as an Assistant Coach with the Trinity Western Spartans (USports).

UNDER-15

Development for players ages 14 and 15. This program focuses on training to train, taking athletes to the next level. Players will fine-tune their skills, beginning to set themselves apart from their competition. Development includes advanced hockey skills as well as growth in hockey sense, dedication to being an elite athlete, emotional control, and resiliency.

  • Shawn is a Hockey Canada High-Performance certified coach, who has worked with NHL players such as Brendan Dillon, Ryan Johansen, and Shea Theodore. Shawn currently coaches Delta Hockey Academy's (CSSHL) U15 Prep Black Team and previously coached minor hockey teams in Langley and Cloverdale.

‘A’ Rep Hockey Development

In LMHA’s 'A' Rep Hockey Division, each 'A' Team will receive a Development Schedule which includes: 10 Player (Forward/Defense) Skill Development Sessions with a Development Coach, 10 Goalie Development Sessions with a Goalie Development Coach, 20 Off-Ice (Dryland) Sessions with a Strength and Conditioning Coach, as well as receive access to a digital platform where all of their team's game film will be stored and available on demand for Coaches and athletes.

This program is designed to help Langley Minor Hockey Association ‘A’ Rep athletes set themselves apart from their competition, growing to their full potential.

Goalie Development

Langley Minor Hockey Association’s Goaltenders in both 'C' and 'A' Hockey (U9, U11, U13, U15, U18) are able to register for LMHA's Goalie Development Programs, which run throughout the season. Each session is run by a minimum of five paid Goalie Development Coaches for specialized instruction and is limited to 20 goaltenders per session to ensure a suitable athlete-to-instructor ratio.
